Operating - owning cost of air duct cleaning equipment

If you are an air duct cleaning contractor that uses electric portable vacuum collection systems or are thinking about electric portable vacuum collection systems you should look at both parts of the cost equation.  Part 1 is the first cost or the initial purchase price with shipping.  Part 2 is the cost of operating the equipment over time.  In some cases the operating cost over a 5 or 10 year life span will be more than the purchase price so it’s important that you understand both parts of the cost equation. 

The operating cost of electric portable vacuum collection systems is primarily the cost of filter replacement.  You need to look at both the cost of the filter(s) and the frequency at which they need to be replaced.  The cost of the filter(s) is easy to determine but the frequency of replacement is not easy to determine.  Frequency of replacement is dependent on hours of usage.  The more you use the equipment the more frequent you will have to change the filters. 

Let’s look at an example of three units to illustrate how the filter replacement cost affects total cost.  We have assumed average usage and made sure the equipment packages offer the same items and accessories (flex hoses, power cords, etc.).

System A: Single cabinet, 1.5 hp motor, 3,500 free air cfm fan, operates on a 110v/15amp circuit, weights 167 lbs., and has three stage filtration.

  • 1st stage: cleanable mesh bag, replacement cost $110.00, replace every other year
  • 2nd stage: pleated bag filter, replacement cost $37.50, replace every month
  • 3rd stage: 18” x 24” x 6” HEPA filter, replacement cost $225.00, replace once a year
  • Unit list price of similar package: $ 5,880.00

System B: Three piece cabinet, 1.5 hp motor, 2,500 free air cfm fan, operates on 110v/15amp circuit, weights 160 lbs., and has three stage filtration.

  • 1st stage: cube filter, replacement cost $28.50, replace every month
  • 2nd stage: pleated bag filter, replacement cost $17.50, replace every month
  • 3rd stage: 24” x 24” x 12” HEPA filter, replacement cost $180.00, replace once a year
  • Unit list price of similar package: $ 3,050.00

System C: Single cabinet, 1.5 hp motor, 3,500 free air cfm fan, operates on 110v/15amp circuit, weights 115 lbs., and has two stage filtration.

  • 1st stage: cleanable pre-filter drawer, replacement cost $150.00, replace every other year
  • 2nd stage: not applicable
  • 3rd stage: 18” x 24” x 6” HEPA filter, replacement cost $130.00, replace once a year
  • Unit list price of similar package: $ 3,575.00

 

                        5 Year Total Cost                               10 Year Total Cost

System A:       $5,880.00 + $3,595.00 = $9,475.00    $5,880.00 + $7,300.00 = $13,180.00

System B:       $3,050.00 + $3,660.00 = $6,710.00    $3,050.00 + $7,320.00 = $10,370.00

System C:       $3,575.00 + $950.00 = $4,525.00       $3,575.00 + $2,050.00 = $5,625.00

 

You can see that filter replacement cost has a dramatic impact on the operating - owning cost and should not be overlooked when comparing electric portable vacuum collection systems.
